Monhegan is a tiny village on Monhegan Island, about an hour's ferry ride off the coast of Maine from Pemaquid Point or Boothbay Harbor. It is known for its scenic beauty and tranquillity (this is not the place for nightlife). It is popular with artists.
The island is criss-crossed by trails, most of which are relatively easy. I am no athlete, but on one sunny Sunday we hiked from the village out to Burnt Head, along the shore to Gull Cove, White Head (view from White Head pictured here), and on to Little White Head before turning homeward along the Swamp Trail and the Cathedral Pines Trail, and we still had over an hour to kill before our 3pm ferry appointment.
Monhegan is a real dream for shutterbugs - everywhere you turn is a calendar shot.
