Pemaquid Point

Pemaquid LightPemaquid Point is scenic and wild, and the historic Pemaquid Point Light is very photogenic. The lighthouse is managed by the US Coast Guard. It is attached to the Fishermens Museum, and surrounding that is a park.

There are rest rooms and a parking area. There is a nominal fee to enter during the day in-season, but we usually get there too late to pay. You can still access the park after hours, but the rest rooms are closed.

You can get to Pemaquid Point via Route 130 from Damariscotta or via Route 32 from Waldoboro. We find Route 32 to be much more scenic. It is easy to make a loop down one road and up the other as you drive the Maine Coast.

the tortured rocks of Pemaquid Point

One of the things I like best about Pemaquid Point is the geology of the area. The rocks reach seaward in long fingers that bend and twist in long reaches out to the water. It's very dramatic. Watching the surf, it is also easy to see why President John Quincy Adams thought it was necessary to put a lighthouse here.
