Stonington

Stonington, MEStonington was built on granite quarrying, but that's gone and the lobstering and fishing keeps it going. It's a long way there, longer than going to Bar Harbor even though it appears closer. From the time you turn off Route 1 in Orland, expect another hour of pretty driving before you ever arrive in Stonington.

The view from Caterpillar Hill en route to StoningtonOn the other hand, a lot of the drive really is excellent - winding roads, hills, tiny villages, and the incredible vista from the viewing area atop Caterpillar Hill as you approach Deer Isle.

Stonington is a place where people visit for awhile. It's quiet, and there isn't much in the way of shopping. When we get to Stonington, we usually eat at the Fisherman's Friend, where Lorna likes the Lobster Pillow and I like the fresh local crabmeat on a Caesar Salad with a Black Bear ale.
