Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is the sparsely-settled area northeast of Rte 89 and bisected by I-91 north of St. Johnsbury. It has no major cities and few towns of any significant size. It is quiet and beautiful, with farmland, lakes, hills and distant mountains. It is much more open than the Green Mountains along VT100 and the spacing of the hills, the grades, the condition of the roads all make for hours of happy motoring.
The Northeast Kingdom is almost a foodie heaven. It is home to Jasper Hill and other brilliant cheesemakers, Caledonia Spirits (makers of Barr Hill Gin, at least four microbrewers (Trout River, Kingdom, Hill Farmstead, and Lawson's Finest Liquids), an organic seed company and countless creative organic farmers and chefs. It's almost a foodie heaven because there are very few markets in the Kingdom where you can find their products; your best bet that I have found is to go to the Hunger Mountain Coop in Montpelier or to the Hanover Food Coop in Hanover, NH.
