Rte 113

Rte 113 approaching Stow, MaineI think there is no better foliage drive outside of Vermont than humble Route 113 in Western Maine. It winds through Evans Notch and the Mahoosuc Range of the eastern White Mountains on the NH-Maine border east of North Conway. It offers what is in my opinion the perfect mix of wide-open vistas to the mountains beyond, tunnels of birches and maples, rocky waterways and farm country.

Route 113 is easily accessible from North Conway, NH, and immediately adjacent to Fryeburg in the south and the Androscoggin River in the north.

horses in Fryeburg, MEFor a really good foliage drive from the south, take Rte 153 along the NH-Maine border to Ossipee and on to Conway, then 302 to 113. Beyond Evans Notch at Gilead, turn right and follow Route 2 to Bethel, then Route 26 back towards Portland.
