Yellow Transparent![]() Lorna's grandfather grew these on his apple farm in Hopkinton, MA. She still remembers the first apple pies of the season, baked by her mother using this variety. Sadly, this beautiful, tart early-season variety is nearly extinct in New England, now grown only by orchardists who care about maintaining heirloom varieties. The main obstacles to their continued popularity are their early season (before most people are thinking of apples) and their poor keeping qualities which makes them a difficult choice for supermarkets. The season for Yellow Transparents is late July to early August. I seek them out every year. The apples in this photo were at the City Market/Onion River Coop in Burlington, VT on 31 July 2021.
