Bow Street Market

Bow Street MarketWe were exploring along back roads from Brunswick to Freeport when we came upon this treasure. The Bow Street Market is a big place with a strong local focus.  It is a fine supermarket in its own right, a discreet, somewhat upscale member of the Hannaford chain, but the thing I liked best about it was its wide selection of local foods.

(I'll admit I was surprised to see an aisle of Clamming Supplies, too!)

The butcher counter has a nice selection and friendsly, knowledgeable staff who are willing to special-order whatever you need. Among the fare: both red and brown hot dogs. Red hot dogs are a Maine thing. I am told the only difference is color, but (strictly in the interest of Science) I bought one of each for my own taste-test: stay tuned for details.

Around the corner were fish, including two types of local oysters and the famous Wellfleet oysters from Massachusetts, too. They also had tiny Maine shrimp, sometimes called salad shrimp in Massachusetts; I bought a bag of smoked Maine shrimp to enjoy sometime soon.

The market also has an extensive selection of wines and spirits, including some high-end and hard-to-find ones. Some prices were high and some were low: Lorna found her favorite MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir for $2 less than it goes for at the NH State Liquor Stores (we cannot even find it at home), but the Old Overholt Straight Rye Whiskey that I like for a Sazerac was $4 more than I pay in Plymouth or NH.  On the other hand they had the Dolin dry vermouth that I had tried at Drink and had never seen since.

The Bow Street Market is just a few blocks seaward of Route 1 in the middle of Freeport, It is a big place with ample parking.
