Golden Harvest has an excellent selection of produce and local dairy products, including heirloom apples and potatoes, golden beets, carrots that are three times the size of supermarket carrots, and plenty of other forage for the herbivorous foodie.

You never know what you'll find here. I found a lovely Watermelon Radish that was an effective conversation piece in addition to its crudite duties at the Old Colony Club's annual Past Presidents Night Gala in 2012.

They have wines and cheeses, too, including a fair assortment of New England cheeses, but sometimes they are a little old, so be sure to give them a sniff first - if you smell ammonia, you don't want it!

Every time I come here, I am reminded of a great t-shirt I once saw: "Vegetables are what food eats".
