Dr. Gonzo's Uncommon Condiments claim to be "good fer what ails ya!" and I believe it. This remarkable array of delectable near-biohazards comes with an irresistible dose of whimsy and chutzpah in every jar. These are hard to find, but they are definitely worth the search.

I started with the basic Peppermash, a mix of crushed peppers and spices like you might get on a sandwich when they ask if you want "hots", but infinitely more flavorful than the plastic bucket o' hots that comes off the Sysco truck. Peppermash is hot, but not intolerably so.

You might feel differently about the Supermash, or the Habaneromash, or (if you are in a luau kind of mood) the tiki-inspired and awesomely-named Kamehamehamash.

But Dr. Gonzo is not just a monster of the mashes. I love his Smoke Isle Elixir on a burger, or the fabulous lime-based Wazoo Juice, especially with haddock, or with My Favorite Breakfast.
