Description

This homey, slightly sweet, full-flavored bread was a staple on every breakfast table when we toured all parts of Ireland in 2016. 

Ingredients

4cKing Arthur Irish-style Flour
3TSugar
1tSalt
1tBaking Soda
2tBaking Powder
1 1⁄2cButtermilk
2TButter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400. Add a baking stone if you want to use one.
  2. In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients, then add buttermilk and butter.
  3. Knead briefly, until the dough holds together.
  4. Place on a greased baking sheet or on the baking stone dusted with flour. Slash a deep cross in the top and put in to bake.
  5. Bake about 40 minutes, or until it sounds hollow when thumped on the bottom.
  6. Let cool before serving.
