Description

This is a traditional Italian-American favorite.

Ingredients

1lbSpry
1cSugar
3eaEggs (lightly beaten)
5cFlour
1TBaking Powder
1pnSalt
1tVanilla extract
1tLemon extract
1cMilk
1lbSesame Seeds, toasted

Instructions

Blend sugar and fat, then add eggs and combine well. Combine flour Baking Powder, and Salt, then blend in the fat mixture. Add Vanilla and Lemon extracts. Preheat oven to 350. Form into crescents, discs, or rods a little bigger than thumb-sized. This can be quick with a cookie press; you can tweak the shapes later. Dip in milk, then roll in seeds and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake about 20 minutes.

Notes

Spry was mentioned in Mama's recipe, but it hasn't been made since the 1970s. You can use Crisco or unsalted butter. I like butter.

unfortunate name

I made these to bring to work. I formed them with a cookie press, but left them as short rods. Some smart-aleck at work said they reminded him of his cat. He called them Litter-Box Cookies!

I wish I hadn't read that!

What a jerk! I love those cookies - my grandmother used to make them all the time. I wonder is she used Spry?
